Data Integrity and Protection

Maintaining data integrity is a key feature of Broadberry ZFS Appliances.

Open-E JovianDSS possesses a number of features to help maintain data integrity, including on- & off-site data protection and the utilisation of snapshots. These features safeguard from human error, transfer errors, malicious actors, viruses/malware and threats arising from compromised hardware.

Seamless Integration with Active Directory

Active Directory is a Microsoft technology used to manage devices on a network and a primary feature of Windows Server.

Active Directory delivers an efficient way for network admins to segment large volumes of users into effective, organised groups whilst providing access control at each level, which becomes increasingly useful as a network continues to grow.

Broadberry ZFS Appliances powered by Open-E JovianDSS feature quick, simple and seamless integration with Active Directory, therefore enabling all new SMB assign ACL’s using Windows user and groups.

Inline Compression and Deduplication

Data compression allows you to store more data in less space. With inline compression, data is compressed as it's written and only new data is compressed.

Inline deduplication is the removal of redundancies from data before or while it's written to a backup device. It also reduces the capacity required for the backup disk targets, when compared to post-process deduplication.

There are different methods of deduplication. A common method breaks data into pieces and assigns each piece a unique hash identifier. Algorithms check the hash identifier as the data is being written. The algorithms then check to see if the hash identifier already exists in storage, in which case the new copy is not stored.

128-bit file system – Up to 10PB Useable Storage in Single Namespace

Broadberry ZFS Appliances feature a 128-bit file system and are scalable up to 10PB of useable storage.

Open-E Jovian DSS allows for the online scaling of your pool and shares. If more capacity is required you can simply attach additional JBODs to your storage controller and add new disks to the existing pool. Open-E JovianDSS allows you to scale up to 10PB of usable space within a single namespace.

Thick, Thin and Over Provisioning

Broadberry ZFS Appliances excel at thick provisioning, thin provisioning and over provisioning.

As space is pre-allocated, thick provisioning guarantees there will be enough capacity available. Whereas thin provisioning is more flexible and allows you to get the most out of the storage space available.

Over-provisioning allows for data to be erased from an SSD, without it impacting system performance. You can adjust the dedicated over-provisioning space, potentially leading to faster speed and increased SSD life.

Tiered RAM and SSD/NVME Caching

Broadberry ZFS Appliances feature tiered RAM, where data is stored on different types of media based on performance, recovery and availability requirement. Tiered storage improves operation efficiency and contributes to lowered cost.

SSD/NVMe caching helps meet data requests with enhanced speed. It's designed to deliver enhanced performance in an easily configurable and cost-effective manner and a program only needs to be run once for data to be stored in the cache drive for future access.

No Storage Islands with ZFS-based Open-E JovianDSS

ZFS offers a full all-in-one solution with advanced management features.

Traditional storage islands feature separate and distinct storage entities that have limited connectivity ability because of their narrow specialisation. The downsides of topologies like this include lower productivity and inefficient utilisation of resources like hardware and network.

ZFS removes the problem of storage islands. It offers a full all-in-one solution with advanced management features. ZFS file system is cross-platform with multiple access protocols: iSCSI, Fibre Channel (FC), NFS, SMB (CIFS). Storage management is flexible, data is organised into pools and then further into zvols (for block-based storage) and datasets (for file-based storage). Available data storage is efficiently utilised via thin and over provisioning.

Unified Storage Model - iSCSI, Fibre Channel (FC) and NFS, SMB (CIFS) Protocols

The solutions in this range feature a unified storage model, allowing you to run and manage files and applications from a single device. It consolidates file- and block-based access in a single storage platform.

This architecture utilises file protocols like iSCSI, Fibre Channel (FC), SMB (CIF) and NFS to enable users to access consolidated storage and applications.

Unified storage leads to reduced hardware needs and multiple storage platforms and allows for you to combine both within a single device, for example NAS for file-based and a RAID disk array for block-based storage.

Fibre Channel Technology

Fibre Channel Technology with Open-E JovianDSS & Shared Storage HA Cluster

Fibre Channel technology is well suited for creating SAN topologies for virtualisation, e.g. ESXi, data centres or other platforms which deal with dozens of hosts. You are able to create high performance SAN storage systems featuring high throughput and low latency. Fibre Channel delivers high stability, is immensely reliable and ensures data safety.

The ZFS-based Open-E JovianDSS Data Storage software delivers support for Fibre Channel technology in two ways: Initiator for connected external Fibre Channel devices and Target for serving virtual volumes over the FC protocol.

Data Acceleration

Data acceleration allows for quicker processing through leveraging advancements in hardware and software for computer clusters, allowing them to operate with significantly enhanced efficiency.

Broadberry Storage Servers powered by Open-E Jovian DSS feature -

  • Acceleration of random writes with Write Log (ZIL (ZFS Intent Log)) on SSD (SATA/SAS/NVMe)
  • Hybrid Read Cache
  • First level in RAM (ARC - Adaptive Replacement Cache)
  • Second Read Cache level (L2ARC) on an SSD (SATA/SAS/NVMe)
  • Write Log (ZIL) allows acceleration of randjom writes.
  • High cache rate by utilising ARC’s most recent used and most frequently used Read Cache algorithms.
  • Rebuild used space with data resilvering.
  • Enhanced performance through compression and deduplication.

ZFS File System

Without a hardware device, most file systems can only manage one disc at a time. Whereas ZFS natively manages disks both disks and volumes.

ZFS is 128-bit and has record-breaking scalability. It also features:

  • State-of-the-art, unmatched data reliability (which includes automatic data repair and silent corruption detection) from end to end, due to transparent checksums in parent block pointers.
  • Eradication of RAID5 write hole which often requires battery-powered disk technology or UPS technology to ensure that RAID arrays stay consistent in case of power failures.
  • Online array reconstruction / reassemble, in significantly shorter time than usually needed to reconstruct an array. This is due to reconstruction being dependent on contents instead on disk topology.
  • Automatic deduplication and compression of data, selectable per volume or filesystem depending on administrator policy.
  • Protection from silent disk data corruption through online check(scrub) and online resilver.

ZFS utilises a variety of techniques to achieve its outstanding performance –

  • Dynamic striping is utilised across every device, maximising throughput.
  • Majority of disk writes are sequential due to copy-on-write design.
  • There are a multitude of block sizes, chosen automatically to match workload.
  • Clear I/O priority with deadline scheduling.
  • Globally optimal I/O sorting & aggregation.
  • A multitude of independent prefetch streams featuring automatic length and stride detection for maximum streaming performance.
  • Unlimited and instant read/write snapshots.
  • Parallel constant-time directory operations

Silent Data Corruption Prevention

Small data corruption is a constant threat, even on enterprise-class drives.

Standard disk redundancy (RAID or mirror) does not safeguard against silent corruption. The file system ends up receiving damaged data when is then passed onto an application, which goes on to operate on corrupted data.

ZFS has a method for preventing silent data corruption. First an application issues a read, then ZFS mirror tries the first disk. Checksum reveals that the block is corrupted on the disk. ZFS tries the second disk and checksum indicates that the block is good. ZFS returns the good data to the application and repairs the damaged block in a process called self-healing.
